With the holidays in full swing, one of the most common things to do in preparation for the upcoming festivities is to go shopping for gifts to give to family and other loved ones. Though you may be full of holiday cheer, thieves are ready to take advantage of this distraction to get their hands on your goods. Here are some tips on how to prevent a car break-in this holiday season.
Make sure your car is locked and your windows are closed – This may seem like a no-brainer, but it can be easily forgotten if you are rushing from one place to another. Before you turn off the car, make sure all of your windows are closed. As soon as you get out of the car, make sure your doors are completely locked. This is the easiest thing you can do to slow down potential thieves from getting into your car.
Have a good alarm system installed in your car – Typically, newer cars have decent alarm systems already installed. However, there are always ways to enhance your system to help deter thieves from targeting your vehicle. Some things you can add to your alarm system are cameras, louder siren and GPS tracking.
Place shopping bags in the trunk of the car – An easy way to make your car a target is if there are visible shopping bags in the car. As soon as you are done shopping, put your bags in your trunk. A thief may overlook your car if they are not sure if they can get anything from it. If you don’t have a trunk, put your shopping bags behind your front seat and underneath a blanket or jacket, or in dark garbage bags. Same goes for your purse, kid’s backpack, or anything that may look enticing to a thief.
Park in a well-lit spot near the front of the store or mall or park near a security guard station – Parking in an area with a lot of lights and visibility can help keep thieves away from your car. This is especially true if you park near a guard station. Thieves are looking to get in and out of your car quickly so they do not get caught. Many will target cars away from the main traffic of the store or shopping center.
Be aware of your surroundings – It is easy to get distracted while out shopping but try to remain vigilant of those around you. Keep an eye out for anyone who may be following you, either in the store or mall or in the parking lot. If you are every unsure ask for a security guard to escort you to your car or shop with a group or at least one other person.
