Car theft is one of the worst experiences you can have. By no fault of your own, you are stuck in place with no way to fix the situation. Most people don’t know what to do when they first find out their car was stolen or broken into. You immediately start to think, “Do I need to finance a new vehicle?” and “Will I be able to make it to work tomorrow?” The damages of a stolen car can be very overwhelming.

After you call the police, you will want to call your insurance company. If you have comprehensive coverage under Preferred Link, we will cover the cost of a stolen car. However, you must file a police report prior to the claim. There will be a short wait time before we process your claim, in the hopes your car will be found with little to no damages.

Comprehensive coverage does not cover theft of belongings inside the car. It also does not cover lost wages due to lack of transportation. If your car is recovered you should report it immediately to speed up your claims processing. We will cover damages if your car is found after the theft. Report the thefts to the police as soon as possible.

Before you file a claim with your insurance company, make sure your car wasn’t towed or  repossessed. Sometimes the initial panic can cause the circumstances to be overlooked. Perhaps you didn’t realize you parked under a “No Parking” sign, or the person who financed the vehicle has run behind on the payments. Each of these situations is amendable, so think carefully before you panic.
