car maintenance tips

Not many drivers are mechanically inclined. Still, there are some basic car maintenance tips everyone should know to keep their cars running and looking like new. Or, at the very least to keep from being stranded on the side of the road.

Oil and Fluids

You should check your oil once a month or as recommended by your car’s owner’s manual. The oil in your car should be changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. When taking your car in for an oil change make sure they also check all other fluids such as power-steering, brake, wiper, and automatic transmission.

Check your tire pressure regularly to avoid accidents and improve fuel efficiency. Tires should also be rotated about every 6,000 to 8,000 miles and the alignment should be checked at the same time as well. Doing this will ensure even tread wear and help prevent accidents.

Air Filter

Depending on how much you drive and the road conditions (paved or unpaved) you should check your air filters about every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or at the very least every 3 years. Doing so can make a big difference in fuel economy in older vehicles and improve acceleration time in newer ones.

Washing your car regularly, especially after road trips will not only keep it looking like new but will also help protect it. Dirt, chemicals, bugs, and bird droppings that accumulate on your car will eventually wreak havoc on the paint job. Spilled food and drinks, pen marks, melted crayons etc. can also take a toll on your car’s interiors if not taken care of right away.

Scheduled Service

There are certain components of car maintenance that may be easily overlooked. For this reason, it is important to schedule and keep regular check-ups for your car. During a check-up things like the cooling system, brakes, hoses, exhaust, etc. will be inspected and replaced or repaired as needed.

Proper car maintenance will not only keep you safe on the road but can also help keep your car insurance low. A car that is properly maintained is much safer to drive. By preventing accidents, you are also avoiding potentially costly insurance claims.
