With medical and technological advancements at an all-time high, it is no surprise people around the world are now living longer than ever. You don’t have to make any drastic changes, get fancy gadgets or costly supplements to extend your life though. Adopting these 6 lifestyle changes can help you live longer and better.

  1. Stay close to friends and family

Being part of community helps us feel a sense of purpose and is important to keeping us happy and maintaining our mental and physical health. Build on your bonds with your friends and family by staying in touch frequently. You can also join a club, take a class, or look for volunteering opportunities to help you stay socially active.

  1. Rethink retirement

Everyone’s dream is to retire but no one plans on what to do after retirement. Often when older adults are no longer working, they find their mental and physical health declining as they are no longer active or have a sense of purpose. Retirement may not be for everyone. If working keeps you happy then there is no reason to retire or you may want to consider postponing your retirement a couple of years. If you are no longer happy with your job then take the time to line up activities such as traveling, mentoring or volunteering to keep you active and mentally sharp.

Many studies have shown that those who practice daily mediation or prayer, have strong faith, and regularly attend religious services live longer. If spirituality isn’t your thing you can try taking up reading. A study in the journal of Social Science and Medicine found that those who read frequently lived an average of 2 years longer than those who don’t read.

  1. Focus on being active

It is no surprise that exercise keeps us healthy but in order to live longer you don’t need to turn into a gym rat or marathoner. Simply focusing on doing some sort of physical activity each day can add years to your life. Try walking, swimming, gardening or other gentle physical activities for at least 30 minutes a day.

  1. Eat Slowly and Mindfully

Most of us are usually rushing all day long but this can have serious consequences for our stress levels and our health. For at least one meal a day focus on taking your time to savor your food, enjoy a good conversation and take your time to just be present in the moment.

  1. Indulge once in a while

Eating healthy is key for keeping us disease-free and increasing our life span. This doesn’t mean though that you have to say goodbye to chocolate cake and pizza forever. Keep a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and lean organic protein most of the time and let yourself indulge in sweets or salty treats every once in a while, or on special occasions. You’ll stick to your healthy eating habits better when you don’t feel so restricted.
